Smart Cities Waste Management Plans

Indian cities are now turning over a new leaf with solid waste management. As urban India continues to grow in its infrastructure and population, the waste also increases exponentially. Apart from being a public health issue, the waste also causes serious law issues as people turn to violent methods to protest waste from being dumped in their backyards. In addition, cities are facing major challenges to finding the space to dispose of waste. The urban population is growing at 3–3.5% annually, and the waste is expected to increase by 5% every year.

On the positive side, the government is now pushing for cities — both metros and tier-II to be converted into smart cities — with sustainable use of energy and better waste management solutions. At Mailhem, we are constantly innovating to resolve these waste management challenges and have been successful in doing so for Indore, one of India’s rapidly growing smart cities. Similarly, Nashik Waste Management also helps convert waste to energy in many cities and smart cities with its integrated waste management plans and plants.

Indore 15 TPD Biogas Plant

Mailhem Environment Pvt. Ltd. has undertaken a plant at Indore of capacity 15 TPD to convert segregated organic municipal solid waste into Compressed Biogas (CBG). This biomethanation plant for Indore Smart City Development Corporation Ltd. is operated and maintained by Mailhem for last 3 years.

Process Flow

Once the feed enters the shed, it passes through the waste conveying and crushing system. Next, it goes to the anaerobic digester, which has a capacity of 1200 cum per day wherein the process of biomethanation takes place. The raw biogas holder has a volume of 375 cum each which contains the biogas before it heads for purification in the unit of 150 cum per hour. Finally, the biogas enters the BioCNG dispensing system with dual arm which is filled into vehicles for use on roads.

Mailhem Indore

By converting the city’s waste into biogas that powers the city’s vehicles, Mailhem isn’t just resolving the city’s waste issues, but also saving energy for the future.

Biogas plants are a highly effective way to convert waste into energy in smart cities. In fact, the government has also highly appreciated our efforts and we are now extending this system to many other cities and communities to help reduce waste in landfills and also ease the load on natural resources.

Smart cities are not just about technologies that improve lives but also technologies that reduce waste in many ways. At Mailhem, we feel privileged to be able to contribute to India’s smart city mission.
